Professional Experience
With over 15 years of experience in foreign and second language teaching, Cassia De Abreu, MA Ed.TESOL, started her career in Brazil where she taught EFL for five years while obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Shortly after graduation, she moved to the United States to further her education in Applied Linguistics and language teaching. Ms. De Abreu has been teaching Portuguese as a Foreign language at the Community College and University levels since 2005 in California, USA, where she resides permanently. Her areas of expertise are Portuguese as a Foreign language and English as a Second and Foreign Language. Some of her areas of interest are: Pedagogical approaches to language teaching, instructional technology, language teaching materials design, and foreign language teacher training.
Currently, Ms. De Abreu is a lecturer in Portuguese at San Diego State University and a Continuous Appointment lecturer in Portuguese at UC San Diego. In addition, she is an active member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and holds a position as the Portuguese Special Interest Group (PORT SIG) secretary. She is also a member of the California Language Teachers Association (CLTA), and Foreign Language Council of San Diego (FLCSD). More recently, in June of 2015, she pioneered as the Portuguese Language Leader at SDSU's Startalk Teacher Training Program at LARC.
For her, teaching foreign languages is as much of a science as it is an art, and as such, this profession requires constant learning by the educator in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field. She sees the validity of an education as a tool of social empowerment and achievement, and aims to inspire her students to learn and innovate in the 21st century. "Never stop achieving! Where can a foreign language take you?"
